Title: Training our “elasticity” Resilience is the ability of being able to return to a good condition following adversities. It’s just like a balloon being squeezed and then returning to its original shape – similar to the concept of being “elastic”. Resilience is not something we were born with. It can be learnt. Cool, let me show you how to do it! Positive Thinking Life is full of ups and downs, but we should stay optimistic even in difficult situations! Try to see things from different angles and understand difficulties in a positive way. For example, there may be many reasons for failure in a maths test. The test may have been especially difficult, we may have been playing on the phone the night before the test, or we have not been in good shape during the test… We need to realise what can be improved and focus on the solutions. Tell ourselves, “I must work harder next time, prepare well, go to bed early and I will achieve better results!” Problem-solving Skills We should actively deal with problems. Even though we might fail, we should learn from the experience, review our problem-solving skills and believe that we can do better next time when we come across the same problem. If the problem cannot be solved, try to change our mindset and accept that change is a part of life. Learn to say “So what?” and keep going forward. Positive Emotions Pay attention to our own feelings and engage in healthy activities that can lift up our mood. Also, learn to be grateful, as it allows us to focus on positive things and experience positive emotions. Support Network Development Develop good relationships with family and friends. Accept their support and help. Well, it’s the end of the demonstration! In summary, adversity can be an opportunity to improve ourselves by building-up experience, increasing our “elasticity” and preparing ourselves for future challenges. Remember! Resilience can be learnt. Keep practising and you’ll succeed!
